The layout is powered by an Easy-DCC system with both radio and tethered throttles. The signal system is based on C/MRI hardware and software, with sub-programs written by Bill Schaper specifically for the RCW. Bill also designed the IR detectors and the IC circuits for each detector set, switch motor, and signal set at each end of a passing track which minimizes the number of leads required to go to SMINI boards. It is a block permissive system, with the signals controlled by the computer based on train detection by trackside-mounted IR detectors. Main line switches have the capability to be controlled from a dispatcher’s console using a panel made by Mike Burgett and C/MRI technology. Local control of signals protecting towns for switching crews has also been provided.
Operations utilize a car-card system with 4-position waybills. A Rail-Lynx fast clock has been installed. Several operating sessions have been held, with a learning curve that is resulting in improvements as we go along. RailOp is being implemented as well, so we can determine which system we like to operate with.
